In this edition of our Treasury Leader Spotlight, Mike gets real about how AI is redefining the DNA of finance and treasury roles, from uncovering overlooked talent to championing a new kind of professional: the strategic translator. His answers reveal how AI isn&#8217;t just speeding up workflows, it’s shifting mindsets.</p>

<h3 id="ember389" class="ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3">What’s one way AI has already changed how your team works?</h3>
<p id="ember390" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph"><strong>AI hasn’t just changed how we work &#8211; it’s changed </strong><strong><em>what</em></strong><strong> we value.</strong></p>
<p id="ember391" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">For me, AI has helped reframe where we spend our time. As a recruiter, that means less time manually filtering CVs or chasing admin and more time having real conversations with candidates and clients. Just like treasury teams automating reconciliations or FX hedging, we’ve used AI tools to streamline repetitive tasks &#8211; so we can focus on building relationships, not processing data.</p>
<p id="ember392" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">And I’m seeing the same shift in the clients I work with. At NASDAQ, Dana Laidhold’s treasury team uses bots to execute FX trades, generate journal entries, and complete in 20 minutes what used to take days. That time-saving unlocks the real value: deeper analysis, better decision-making, and more impactful conversations across the business.</p>
<p id="ember393" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">AI hasn’t replaced the human element &#8211; it helped <em>amplify</em> it.</p>
<h3 id="ember394" class="ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3">What’s the biggest shift you expect to see in finance and treasury over the next 5 years?</h3>
<p id="ember395" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph"><strong>The rise of the “strategic translator.”</strong></p>
<p id="ember396" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">We’re already seeing treasury evolve from operational to strategic. But over the next five years, I believe we’ll see treasurers expected to sit at the intersection of finance, data, and tech &#8211; acting as translators between business objectives and AI capability.</p>
<p id="ember397" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">That doesn’t mean hiring an army of coders. It means having people who are curious, tech-aware, and confident enough to ask: <em>Can we automate this? Is there a better way?</em></p>
<p id="ember398" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Craig Jeffery at Strategic Treasurer calls this the rise of the “strategic translator” &#8211; and I think he’s spot on.</p>
<p id="ember399" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">The future treasury professional won’t just know cash positions. They’ll know how to leverage AI tools to forecast them, explain the outputs, and challenge the assumptions behind them. That shift is already starting &#8211; and it’s only accelerating.</p>
<h3 id="ember400" class="ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3">What do you wish more CFOs or treasury leaders would stop ignoring?</h3>
<p id="ember401" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph"><strong>The hidden talent already sitting in their team.</strong></p>
<p id="ember402" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Too many leaders think adopting AI means hiring a new skill set from scratch. But in reality, <em>the skills are often already there</em> &#8211; they just need room to breathe.</p>
<p id="ember403" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">At ASML, a two-person team built a Python-based forecasting model that beat their manual one by miles. No external vendor, no seven-figure budget. Just two curious people and the space to test something new.</p>
<p id="ember404" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">I’d love more CFOs to stop thinking of AI as a “technology project” and start treating it as a “people empowerment opportunity.” Give your team the time and tools to experiment.</p>
<p id="ember405" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Encourage them to explore. The best ideas often don’t come from the top &#8211; they come from the people closest to the process.</p>
<h3 id="ember406" class="ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3">If you had a magic AI assistant for finance, what would you ask it to do first?</h3>
<p id="ember407" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph"><strong>“Sort out the data mess.”</strong></p>
<p id="ember408" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Ask any treasurer what slows them down &#8211; and 9 times out of 10, it’s data.</p>
<p id="ember409" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Disconnected systems, messy spreadsheets, inconsistent formatting, manual inputs &#8211; it’s like a digital jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing.</p>
<p id="ember410" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">If I had a Corporate Treasury AI assistant, their first job would be to <em>harmonize and map data across all treasury functions</em>.</p>
<p id="ember411" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Pull in ERP feeds, bank data, cash positions, hedging exposures.</p>
<p id="ember412" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Then clean it, structure it, and make it ready to read and understand for the Treasurer.</p>
<p id="ember413" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">AI is only as good as the data feed.</p>
<p id="ember414" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">We need to fix the foundations first and then the rest becomes much easier &#8211; faster decisions, better forecasting, and more clarity all-round.</p>
<h3 id="ember415" class="ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3">What’s the biggest misconception you think people have about AI in finance?</h3>
<p id="ember416" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph"><strong>That it’s only for big budgets or big teams.</strong></p>
<p id="ember417" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">This one drives me mad.</p>
<p id="ember418" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">AI is not just for the Google’s and JP Morgans of the world.</p>
<p id="ember419" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">Companies like ASML and Agrocorp have shown you can do a <em>lot</em>with a little.</p>
<p id="ember420" class="ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph">At ASML, they built a forecasting tool using open-source Python and in-house talent and won an award for it too!</p>

<p>Let’s play a quick game. Be honest…</p>
<p><strong>When was the last time you posted on LinkedIn?</strong></p>
<p>A few weeks ago? A few months? Never?</p>
<p>If you’re feeling called out, don’t worry &#8211; you’re in good company.</p>
<p>I recently hosted a session for TMANY, the Treasury Management Association of New York and during our session we ran a live poll asking treasurers how often they posted on LinkedIn, and the results made me literally bang my head on the table.</p>
<ul>
<li>48% said they <em>“occasionally”</em> remember to post</li>
<li>42% admitted they “rarely” post, or hadn’t in years</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>90% of treasury professionals admitting they are essentially INVISIBLE ONLINE </strong><strong><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f620.png" alt="😠" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></strong></p>
<p>OK, I get it, LinkedIn has long been seen as a “job site.”</p>
<p>And you might think that posting regularly sends a signal that you’re looking for a new job…</p>
<p>But that’s the biggest LinkedIn myth out there.</p>
<p>Your LinkedIn is your digital business card.</p>
<p><strong>It’s not just about job hunting. It’s about making connections, showcasing expertise, and, most importantly, making sure the world knows you exist.</strong></p>
<p>Because if you don’t show up, someone else will.</p>
<p>Think about it:</p>
<p><strong>Have you ever wanted to be invited to speak at a treasury event? </strong></p>
<p>Posting insights and engaging in discussions makes you visible to conference organisers. <em>(I know because this happened to me &#8211; before, I had to ask for speaking slots. Now, they invite me!)</em></p>
<p><strong>Do you want to expand your network beyond the same 30 people you talk to daily? </strong></p>
<p>Posting means new people find you, interact with you, and see you as someone worth knowing.</p>
<p><strong>Are you hoping for a career move down the line? </strong></p>
<p>Recruiters (like me) don’t just search for people actively looking for jobs—we look for people who stand out. If your profile is collecting dust, you’re missing out.</p>
<p>Now, let’s get into what I suspect is the real problem…</p>
<p>What the hell do you post on LinkedIn?</p>
<p>Well, it doesn’t have to be ground-breaking. Here are three simple ideas:</p>
<ol>
<li>Commentary on industry news – If something big happens in treasury, share your thoughts.</li>
<li>A quick career lesson – Did you solve a tricky problem at work this week? Share it (without breaching confidentiality, of course). I’m sure others will relate.</li>
<li>A win (big or small) – Closed a great deal?</li>
</ol>
<p>Implemented a new process? Improved a system? Celebrate it! If you don’t &#8211; then who will?</p>
<p>It’s a numbers game. You don’t need every post to go viral.</p>
<p><strong>You just need to show up.</strong></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">I call it the itch at the “back of my head” moment.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Why? Because I knew I wasn’t being honest with you!!!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I have been recruiting for the past 25 years and most of the job descriptions I read are pretty poor&#8230;.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So let’s start with our goals in mind.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Goal 1</strong> – A potential candidate is interested enough in your company to read your job advertisement.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Goal 2</strong> – They read the job advert is read by them and they decide to apply for the role.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Goal 3</strong> – You send them the Job Description, they read it and decide to progress…..</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Goal 4</strong> – They are interviewed for job, they are the best applicant they get offered and accept the job.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">OK there are a few more bits but you get the idea.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So as the recruitment market booms back into life, competition for <a href="https://treasuryrecruitment.com/candidate-advice/">candidates</a> has never been fiercer.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>OK how do you engage?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>How do you present the role?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>It’s easy,</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>SELL THE DREAM!</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"> A well written job description saves time in the recruitment process as it helps <a href="https://treasuryrecruitment.com/candidate-advice/">candidates</a>, hiring managers and recruitment consultants to be clear about the requirements of the role. If done well it will attract candidates quicker and of a higher quality than you have previously recruited.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Your job description needs to describe the demands of the job and paint a picture of the job, so make the picture bright!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Explain why the job exists and its relationship to organisation&#8217;s objectives and why you would want to do the role.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The main duties and responsibilities and how the job relates to those of others in the organisation can be described by keeping in mind why these duties will help the company and how the individual will make a contribution.</p>
