We are all so excited here at TTRC to welcome Katie Hardie to the business and thought it would be nice for all our supporters and newsletter subscribers out there to find out a little more about our newest member of the team.
Katie joined us at the beginning of September as our new Head of European Practice. This means she will be your key point of contact if you are looking for a new role in Europe or are based in Europe and have any hiring needs. She will be your eyes and ears for what’s going on in the market so if you have any specific questions about your career or would like some general recruitment advice, please give her a call.
So who is Katie and where has she come from?
Well, although we sometimes think she must have been sent down from the Heavens, in reality, it is all much more-straight forward than that. I caught up with Katie to talk about how her first few months in the business have gone and how she is adapting to the world of treasury recruitment.
What’s your background and how long have you worked in the recruitment industry?
I have been in recruitment for 16 years now. I started my career with a specialist retail recruitment business and really learnt the ropes from the ground up. It was a very interesting time to be in recruitment back then, particularly retail as it was so fast-paced and hugely competitive on the agency side. I loved that though as I’m definitely not someone who is afraid of a challenge. I progressed steadily in the business and by the end of my tenure was managing one of the top-performing teams in the company.
From there I decided to make the transition into in-house recruitment and went on to head up the recruitment team for a leading fashion retail chain. Again, this was a hugely fast-paced and challenging role which was extremely exciting for me, especially gaining exposure to the other side of the fence. From here I moved to another in-house position before deciding to get back into agency recruitment again. I love the variety that this offers. Being able to work with different clients, with different demands and needs. This is what drives me, and I feel that with the varied and hands-on experience I’ve gained over the years, I am able to bring a real sense of understanding and appreciation when managing my stakeholders.

What attracted you to The Treasury Recruitment Company?
Working for a specialist recruitment business was absolutely top of my list of priorities. For me, having always worked in a specialist sector, being able to embed yourself into one industry, to become a true expert in your field, is what makes you stand out as a recruiter. I could see through my research, and I did a LOT of research, that TTRC had built a really strong presence in the industry. They were clearly one of the leaders in the space and had built a solid reputation. These were all major tick boxes for me. Another fundamental aspect was the culture and company ethics. Having spent many hours talking with Mike prior to joining and meeting the rest of the team, I was able to get a real flavour of the style and personality of the business which was very much aligned to the way I like to work. The other aspect for me which really stood out was the way in which they view the role they play in terms of supporting the wider treasury community.
It is not just about filling a job or placing a candidate, it is about offering a whole host of other services and features which add value for our partners.
What about the role itself, why treasury?
To be honest I didn’t know much about treasury before joining the business. I have recruited various finance positions previously and in fact, very much enjoyed working on these assignments, but treasury was never an area I had touched on. For me though, to be a good recruiter it’s about understanding the individual and their motivations for seeking a new role or understanding a client and what they are looking for in a new hire. I do not need to be a treasury expert to achieve this, I need to be a good recruiter. Of course, the treasury understanding will come over time and I am surprised at how much I have learnt about the industry in just a few months. I am excited to embrace this new area and see it as a really rewarding industry in which to be in.
You are heading up the European desk for us, do you have any experience recruiting internationally?
The international element of the role was a real plus for me when accepting the position. I have worked on international assignments previously and loved the variety and challenge these offered. Learning about new countries and cultures really excites me. When recruiting roles internationally, you will often need to support candidates in the relocation process, sometimes involving moving their partners and families which can be a huge commitment. In doing this, I find that you can build extremely close relationships and long-term partnerships which is really rewarding. The same applies to client relationships.
To be seen as a trusted advisor, working in true partnership with my client is the ultimate goal for me.
What have you enjoyed so far in your role?
Well, I have to say it has been a bit of a whirlwind. After an intense induction training programme, I was whisked off to Luxembourg for ATEL’s 25th Anniversary Annual Conference. This was a fantastic opportunity for me to meet with many key figures in the industry and start to build a real understanding of the industry as a whole. Since then, I have been working on a number of positions with very interesting clients and reaching out to our established network of contacts across Europe to introduce myself. So, it’s fair to say it’s been pretty busy over these past few months but lots of fun, and I’m really excited to see what the next few months has in store for me!
What will be your key focus within the role?
The key focus is to build our presence within the treasury communities across Europe, and this is at all levels. Having spoken with a number of people so far, I am aware there is a bit of a misconception about us in the industry. Many believe we primarily focus on roles at the senior end of the market and whilst this is true, we also focus on roles at the junior end, and the middle and every level in between. We are a Treasury specialist. From entry through to senior. My focus will be on spreading the word, on building our network across the European community and on a personal level, becoming recognised as one of the top international treasury recruiters in the industry.
