About this episode

Changing career paths will always come with an element of struggle. But this week’s Treasury Career Corner guest managed to transition into treasury seamlessly and now heads a department in a major international aluminium company.

This week, we revisit an exceptional episode with Toby Shore, Senior Director of Group Treasury, Risk and Insurance at Emirates Global Aluminium, who joined us back in episode 123. We chat about his transition from risk management into treasury, the importance of multiculturalism within his industry, and much more! At the end, we catch up on what he’s been up to since he was last on the show.

Toby’s primary role is to oversee and manage the liquidity profile, risk management strategies, and capital structure at EGA as it relates to the treasury operations of cash management, counterparty credit risk management, financial risk management, insurance, global tax, and risk and business continuity management.

Emirates Global Aluminium is the largest global producer of ‘premium aluminium’ and the largest non-oil or gas company in the United Arab Emirates. 1 in every 25 tonnes of aluminium is made in the UAE with the involvement of EGA.

On the podcast Toby Shore and I discussed…

  • How Toby made the transition from risk management to treasury in the blink of an eye
  • Navigating through a financial crisis whilst in Dubai
  • How working in a multicultural environment is beneficial
  • What life is like working for what was the largest single-site producer of aluminium in the world
  • Education and upscaling in new workplaces
