The treasury role that’s going extinct

I hear this all the time…

“I’d love a treasury leadership role… but I’m only interested in remote.”

Right. And I’d love to have played No.8 for England, but here we are.

If you’re holding out for 100% remote treasury roles in 2025, I’ve got bad news…

Remote in treasury is disappearing. Slowly. But it IS disappearing…

Remote worked during lockdown because it was a necessity at the time.

But it’s not lockdown anymore.

Treasury is not transactional. It’s not rule-based like some finance disciplines (tax, for example).

Treasury is collaborative by nature.

Often it’s project-based, sometimes unpredictable, and it needs group decision making and working together – that means being around other people.

At least sometimes

I’m not saying you need to be 100% in the office five days a week.

Trust me, that doesn’t go down well either.

Hybrid work is here and it’s not going away.

Not because your CFO likes to see people in the office. It’s for genuine reasons like:

  • Coaching junior staff in real time
  • To forge stronger relationships with your co-workers
  • So you can solve problems in the moment, not after three rounds of emails and a Zoom meeting

I recently saw a role posted online: five days a week, generous compensation, fully on-site. It looked like a solid role… until you read that last bit.

One week on, they had just four applicants.

Four.

Now contrast that with the hybrid roles we’ve been helping clients fill….

A couple of office days a week, maybe more if it’s a busy period, but with flexibility guaranteed.

Unsurprisingly, those are the roles people actually want.

And what about the candidates?

Well, I had someone recently say to me, “I want 100% remote, nothing else.” I had to be honest and say I couldn’t help them. In fact, I’m not sure treasury would even be the right fit if that’s what you’re after.

Because here’s the thing…

If you want to grow in your treasury career, being in the room matters.

Yes, flexibility is important. But if you want a leadership role, if you want to mentor a team, if you want to be seen as strategic – you can’t be a faceless name behind a screen; you’ve got to show up.

Even some fully remote companies are clocking on to this…

I know a US firm where everyone flies in once a quarter for a full week of face-to-face collaboration. They love it. It works.

So, here’s the takeaway:

If you’re still holding out for fully remote, expect slim pickings and a career that may end up stalling out.

But if hybrid is what you’re looking for, we should talk.

Best regards,

Mike
