About this episode

This special solo episode is hosted by Mike Richards, CEO and Founder of The Treasury Recruitment Company and host of the Treasury Career Corner podcast.

For eight years, Mike has spoken with treasury professionals about where they started, the challenges they faced, the decisions that changed their careers and the lessons they would share with those following behind them

The Treasury Career Corner podcast began in 2018 with Sarah-Jane Hall and a simple idea: sit down with great treasury professionals and ask them about their careers.

And it’s that first conversation with Sarah-Jane Hall, remains the podcast’s most downloaded episode to date.

Eight years and 450 episodes later, the podcast has grown into a wider treasury community. Alongside the weekly interviews, Treasury Career Corner now includes LIVE events, Roundtables for senior treasury leaders and Ask the Treasurer sessions for analysts, managers and those earlier in their careers.

In this episode, Mike revisits some of the archive’s most popular conversations and the career themes that treasury professionals continue to ask about today.

Mike Richards, CEO, The Treasury Recruitment Company: Welcome to this week’s Treasury Career Corner podcast, where I interview treasury professionals about their treasury careers. Each and every week, I’ll talk to treasurers about how they’ve built their careers, where they are now, where they see both themselves and the treasury profession going to next. Let’s get on with the show.

This week’s Treasury Career Corner is a little bit different. We haven’t got a guest. When I

realised that, I thought, should we just miss a week, have a week off? No, we can’t do that.

Because now as we approach the 8th anniversary of the Treasury Career Corner podcast, 8 years I’ve been doing it, 450 episodes, which is slightly ridiculous. When I started it, I tell lots of people, I thought we’d maybe get to 10. And at a push, 20 if we were lucky.

I wasn’t thinking that 8 years later, I’d still be recording one each and every week without a break. I thought this was a really good opportunity for a bit of a look back. Because… I got asked by a client the other day, they said, where do you do the podcast? I said, what do you mean?

Well, it’s on our website. It’s on Apple, that little known thing. It’s on Spotify and all other major platforms. So please share it. I said, oh, how many episodes? What are your top ones?

Any you can recommend? I thought because of this, actually, I’d have a look back at those guests that have proved to be most popular. What struck me was that A lot of the subjects we talked about  four, five, six years ago now are still the topics that you guys are talking about each and everyday. How do you develop your career? What skills do you need? Are there any tips about keeping on learning and becoming a better treasury professional? Obviously nowadays we’re thinking about technology and AI and about what it means for you and your treasury career. So I thought we’d give you some of our treasury career corner. Greatest hits, if you like. Now, these aren’t the 10 best episodes, but these are some of the episodes that people have gone back to and the most downloaded. So one of our most downloaded was with Wolfgang Rathheiser about the evolving nature of an international treasury career. Recently caught up with Wolfgang at the Eurofinance Conference and talked about all of that, actually, as he’s moved on to a new role in the UK. Another one I’ll talk about was Burak Yildirim. from Louis Vuitton.

Way back in 2024, one of the key things we talked about was AI and technology, and they’ve only become bigger and bigger. Some of the others, we’ve got Ben Loper in there, we’ve got Tom Balish, George Terziev, Gary Maguire, and actually we got him to come back a couple of times talking about how he climbed the Treasury career ladder. And I love it, the fact that you can go back and listen to some of these, and they are as relevant today as they were back then as well. and that was the idea that i would i spend my life if you like talking to you treasury professionals about your careers look why not give you a voice a mouthpiece if you like you know how you started what happened next what went well what didn’t what challenges you face along the way and somehow eight years later as it comes into 450 episodes me basically a bloke in my shed recording a treasury podcast to meeting people around the world it’s now evolved into our treasury career corner live events and i then interview treasury professionals around the world and i think that’s a bit i’m proudest of it’s not really just the the numbers not the downloads but when someone walks up to me monique in new york and said you’re that podcast speak again. I was like, what? And she said, just say, hi, I’m Mike. You’re the podcast guy I listen to every week on my commute.

So for me, it’s a thank you to, if you, if you listened to one episode, 10, you’ve been here since the beginning. I’m just very grateful. We’re going to keep on going. I hope you enjoy it. And if you look down below in the show notes, you’re going to have our top 10 most downloaded episodes, which I think you guys will really enjoy. Have a listen.
